Competing at his only Olympic Games in 1972, Steve Prefontaine takes the lead of the 5,000 meters with a mile to go before fading back and finishing fourth. Finland’s Lasse Viren, Tunisia’s Mohamed Gammoudi and England’s Ian Stewart secured the gold, silver and bronze, respectively.
